DEADLINE EXTENDED

Applications will be awarded on a rolling basis until the close of this opportunity on August 27, 2021.

The Bee Conservancy is offering community gardens, restaurants, and bars in select cities the opportunity to host a bee-friendly garden planted in an upcycled ABERFELDY whisky barrel.

The barrel garden planter is designed in partnership with Brooklyn Woods, an organization that trains low-income individuals for careers in woodworking, and the talent behind our exclusive Sponsor-a-Hive native bee houses

These casks will help feed local pollinator populations at a time when 1 in 4 of North America’s 4000 native bee species are at risk of extinction, and honey bee colonies continue to die at unprecedented rates. The Barrels & Bees Award helps advance TBC’s mission to protect all bees and secure environmental and food justice through education, research, habitat creation, and advocacy.

The custom-planted barrels will grow seasonal herbs and flowers native to the region they’re in, and support the foraging of local honey and native bees. Local community gardens selected to host the barrel planters permanently will be responsible for planting and maintaining them at nearby restaurant or bar locations during September and October 2021, before they move to their permanent home.

Funding will be granted to community gardens to support transportation needs while tending to the planters at the partner dining establishment.
